Fungal infections

10 tips against pesky fungal infections

Fungal infections are widespread and people often do not know how to treat them correctly. Especially in everyday situations such as sports, saunas or swimming pools, fungi can spread quickly. However, with targeted care and preventive measures, unpleasant infections can be avoided. Which methods are most effective in the fight against fungal infections?
  • Consistently protect your feet in public areas

Always wear pool sandals in communal showers, changing rooms and swimming pools to avoid walking barefoot and thereby prevent direct transmission of fungi.

  • Choose well-fitting, breathable footwear

Pick shoes made from natural materials such as leather or linen that allow good ventilation. Avoid tight models, as these can cause cracks or skin injuries that provide entry points for fungi.

  • Wear and change socks daily

Put on fresh socks made of cotton, wool or silk every day and change them especially after exercise to avoid moist conditions that favour fungal growth.

  • Air and clean your shoes regularly

Take off your shoes after wearing them and let them dry thoroughly. Old or worn shoes should be replaced. If needed, you can use special disinfectant sprays to combat fungi in shoes.

  • Avoid sharing towels and foot-care tools

Use your own towels, nail files and scissors to reduce the risk of infection at home or in a salon. Wash textiles at least at 60 °C or use a disinfectant to kill fungal spores.

  • Clean and dry your feet thoroughly

Wash your feet daily with a pH-neutral soap. Pay particular attention to drying between the toes. Avoid skin injuries by gentle nail care and suitable footwear.

  • Wear sandals regularly

Sandals are ideal for preventing athlete’s foot because they give the feet plenty of air and thus prevent a warm, moist climate. Especially in the warmer months, wear these shoes to keep your feet dry and healthy.

  • Support your immune system with a healthy diet

An alkaline, low-sugar diet supports your immune system and makes it harder for fungi to grow. Avoid processed sugar, as it promotes fungal growth.

  • Supplement your diet with antifungal foods

Regularly include organic coconut oil, fresh garlic, oregano, horseradish, cress and cayenne pepper in your meals, as these foods have antifungal properties.

  • Have your shoes and foot-care materials cleaned and disinfected regularly

In case of a fungal infection, do not lend or resell your shoes, as spores can remain on them. Nail files, scissors and other tools should also be thoroughly disinfected after each use to prevent reinfection or further spread.
