Sunscreens

10 tips for safe sun protection

Sunscreens are among the most important skincare products to protect your skin daily from UV damage, premature ageing and pigmentation. Modern formulations not only offer protection but also strengthen the skin barrier and provide valuable hydration. Choosing the right products and using them correctly will benefit you in the long term with healthier-looking, more resilient skin. Are you ready to discover which products make your sun protection more effective, more pleasant and more practical for everyday life?
  • Choose the right sun protection factor – suited to your skin type

Your natural protection rarely lasts more than a few minutes, especially if you have fair skin. A high SPF (30-50+) reliably protects against UVB radiation and reduces the risk of sunburn and long-term damage. Opt for the stronger option – particularly at the start of the season or for sensitive skin.

  • Look for broad-spectrum protection against UVA & UVB

A good sunscreen protects not only against sunburn (UVB) but also against skin ageing, wrinkles and pigmentation spots (UVA). Products with a UVA seal or the “PA++++” rating offer the safest choice. Pharmacies often carry especially high-quality formulations with stable filter systems.

  • Always apply enough product – more than you think

You need about 1 teaspoon for the face and 4 tablespoons for the body. Only with a sufficient amount will you achieve the stated protection. When in doubt, “too much” is better than “too little” – especially during sports, at the beach or in very hot conditions.

  • Apply 20 minutes beforehand

Give the product enough time to spread evenly over the skin. Many modern formulations are ultra-light and absorb quickly – perfect for daily use, at work and under make-up.

  • Don't forget sensitive areas

Ears, neck, lips, the eye area, the tops of the feet and hands are the areas most often missed when applying sunscreen – and they are particularly vulnerable to sun damage. Look for lip balms with a high SPF and lightweight fluids for sensitive zones.

  • Choose the right texture for your skin type

The right texture determines how pleasant a sunscreen feels on your skin and how reliably it performs. Creams provide intensive care, lighter fluids absorb quickly, gels are excellent for oily or blemish-prone skin, and sprays make it easier to apply to hard-to-reach areas. If you choose a product that suits your skin type, you will apply it more regularly and therefore more effectively.

  • Check water resistance for beach, sport & everyday use

Water-resistant formulations adhere longer and protect better when sweating or swimming. However, they still need to be reapplied afterwards. Products labelled “extra water-resistant” offer particularly high reliability.

  • Reapply regularly – at least every two to three hours

Sunscreen loses effectiveness through friction, movement, clothing, salt or sweat. A handy sun spray or a light travel fluid fits perfectly in a pocket or backpack and makes reapplication on the go easier.

  • Protect children with specially formulated products

Children's skin is significantly more sensitive and requires mineral or dermatologically tested products with a very high SPF. Pharmacies offer extra-mild, fragrance-free options – ideal for babies and toddlers.

  • Use sun protection all year round, not just in summer

UVA rays also penetrate glass and clouds in winter. A lightweight day fluid with SPF 30 protects your skin daily – ideal as a base under make-up and an essential step against premature skin ageing.

  • UV rays are stronger than you think. Even in the water you are not protected – UV rays penetrate up to 30 cm below the surface. Because the skin feels cooler in the water, sunburn is often only noticed when it is already too late.
  • Clouds are not a reliable shield. Up to 90% of UV radiation reaches the Earth even under overcast skies. Light clouds can even intensify the rays by reflecting light – which is why sunburn is particularly deceptive on cloudy days.
  • Sunlight promotes vitamin D production, supports the immune system and improves mood. But too much UV radiation can have the opposite effect. It stresses the heart and circulation and visibly accelerates skin ageing.
