Sore throat

Here are 10 tips to soothe your throat

A raw, scratchy throat can really slow us down in everyday life — whether when speaking, eating or breathing. Often this unpleasant sensation appears before the symptoms worsen. There are, however, ways to quickly relieve the symptoms and get to the root cause. So how can you gently restore a smooth, comfortable throat?
  • Give your body enough rest in bed

Use the rest period to strengthen your immune system. Avoid physical activities so your body can fully focus on healing.

  • Drink enough fluids

Make sure to drink about two litres a day to keep your mucous membranes moist and to flush pathogens from the body more quickly. Warm herbal teas with thyme or sage are especially soothing because they promote blood circulation in the throat mucosa.

  • Breathe through your nose as much as possible

Nasal breathing prevents drying of the throat mucosa. For a blocked nose, seawater sprays help to gently clear the mucous membranes and make breathing easier.

  • Avoid prolonged and loud talking

Give your voice and irritated throat a rest to avoid extra strain on the mucous membranes. Instead, suck sugar-free lozenges that moisten and soothe the mucous membranes.

  • Gargle regularly with salt water or herbal teas

Dissolve three teaspoons of sea salt in a glass of warm water and gargle with it several times a day. Alternatively, chamomile tea is suitable because of its anti-inflammatory effects. Gargling moistens the mucous membranes, relieves pain and flushes out germs.

  • Use the effects of honey

Honey has antiviral and antibacterial properties. Stir two tablespoons of honey and two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar into a glass of warm water or enjoy honey plain in tea to soothe throat pain naturally.

  • Try gentle home remedies

Dissolve two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar or half a teaspoon of cayenne pepper in warm water and gargle with it. Both have antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effects and can support healing.

  • Keep your throat warm

Protect your neck area with a scarf or wear clothing with a turtleneck. Warm neck compresses, for example with medicinal herb tea or crushed potatoes, also stimulate blood circulation and help contain the inflammation.

  • Moisten the room air with a humidifier

Air that is too dry further irritates the mucous membranes and delays healing. A humidifier provides comfortable humidity in the environment and supports the subsiding of pharyngitis.

  • Inhale warm water vapour regularly

Take steam baths with chamomile blossoms or salt to gently moisten and soothe your mucous membranes. Breathe the steam calmly through your mouth to relieve the inflammation directly.

  • Viral infections in particular cause an increase in cases during winter, while streptococcal pharyngitis especially affects children and adolescents and accounts for about one third of infections in this age group.
  • Around four out of five people with acute pharyngitis, which is usually caused by viruses, recover within a few days on their own — without specific treatment.
  • While the chronic form of pharyngitis is caused by irritations and is not contagious, the acute form is often due to an infection that can be easily transmitted from person to person.
  • Virus- or bacteria-containing droplets are released into the air when coughing, sneezing or during close contact. Sharing dishes or glasses also promotes the spread of pathogens.
