Oral flora

10 tips for a healthy and strong oral environment

Our oral flora is more than just a collection of bacteria: it is an important shield for teeth and gums and for our well-being. A balanced oral flora helps prevent inflammation and ensures fresh breath. But how can you best support the balance of these little helpers in your mouth?
  • Maintain a balanced oral hygiene routine

The combination of thorough cleaning, using probiotic products and a balanced diet is crucial for a healthy oral microbiome and long-term health.

  • Brush your teeth thoroughly and regularly

At least twice a day you should brush your teeth for two minutes with fluoride toothpaste. This protects tooth enamel and reduces the number of unwanted microorganisms.

  • Pay attention to interdental spaces

Use dental floss or interdental brushes daily to clean hard-to-reach areas. This prevents germs from settling there and causing inflammation.

  • Clean your tongue as well

A tongue scraper removes coatings from the tongue surface that can contribute to bad breath and infections. This supports the natural cleansing of your oral flora.

  • Supplement your oral care with oil pulling

Morning rinsing with a tablespoon of coconut or sesame oil can gently loosen unwanted bacteria and refresh the mouth environment.

  • Choose probiotic oral care products

Use specific dental care items such as chewing gums, lozenges or mouthwashes containing probiotic cultures. These encourage the growth of beneficial bacteria and help suppress harmful germs in the mouth.

  • Replace your toothbrush in good time

After about three months the bristles are worn and can no longer clean effectively. Old brushes also provide a breeding ground for bacteria. Replace your toothbrush regularly to protect your oral flora.

  • Follow a tooth-friendly diet

Fresh fruit, vegetables and whole grains stimulate saliva production and help balance acidity in the mouth. This promotes the ecological balance of the oral microbiome.

  • Include fermented foods in your daily routine

Foods such as yoghurt, kefir or sauerkraut contain natural probiotics. These promote the growth of beneficial oral bacteria and thus support your oral flora.

  • Also avoid smoking

Tobacco use significantly disrupts the delicate balance of your oral flora and increases the risk of inflammation. Quitting smoking immediately strengthens your oral microbiome.
