Waterproof make-up

10 beauty tips for a look that easily survives rain, tears & heat

Whether at the beach, during sport or on long summer days – waterproof make-up gives you confidence even under challenging conditions. Modern textures are water-resistant, withstand moisture, sweat and tears, yet don’t feel heavy or look unnatural on the skin. This keeps your look reliably fresh, defined and polished. Want to learn how to achieve long-lasting results without irritating or taxing your skin?
  • Start with well-prepared skin

Thoroughly cleansed skin is the most important base for waterproof make-up. Follow with a lightweight, fast-absorbing moisturiser so products spread evenly and don’t look patchy. This increases longevity and protects your skin from drying out.

  • Use a suitable primer

A mattifying or pore-refining primer creates a smooth surface and significantly improves the adhesion of waterproof products. Especially for combination or oily skin, it helps foundation and concealer look fresher for longer. You can find primers for every skin type in drugstores and pharmacies.

  • Apply make-up in thin layers

Waterproof textures work best when used sparingly. Several thin layers look more natural and last better than one thick coat. Allow each layer to dry briefly before applying the next product.

  • Focus on the right key products

Mascara, eyeliner and concealer particularly benefit from waterproof formulations. They prevent panda eyes, smudging or settling into fine lines. For lips, choose long-wear products or specific fixers that lock in colour and definition.

  • Prefer cream textures in hot weather

Cream blush and cream eyeshadows blend with the skin better than powders. Combined with a primer, they also hold up reliably in humidity or sweat. The result looks fresher and less dry.

  • Set selectively for extra hold

A setting spray or light setting powder extends longevity further. It protects your make-up from friction, heat and moisture and ensures an even finish. Ideal for long days, travel or special occasions.

  • Touch your face as little as possible

Even waterproof make-up has its limits. Frequent rubbing or dabbing can reduce wear. Instead, use blotting papers to gently remove shine without damaging your make-up.

  • Don’t forget sun protection

Many waterproof foundations already contain an SPF. This is particularly handy for summer, sport or outdoor activities. Still, make sure UV protection is sufficiently high to protect your skin in the long term.

  • Remove waterproof make-up gently

Regular cleansers are often not enough. Reach for oil-based or biphasic make-up removers specially formulated for waterproof cosmetics. They dissolve pigments effectively without irritating skin or eyes.

  • Care for your skin intensively after removing make-up

After cleansing, the skin needs hydration and calming. A moisturising cream or a soothing serum helps strengthen the skin barrier. This keeps your skin healthy, balanced and ready for the next make-up look.

  • Longevity doesn't come from 'magic' but from film-formers. Waterproof formulas typically contain less water and more polymers, waxes and silicones. These ingredients form an ultra-thin protective film on the skin or lashes after application – moisture, sweat or tears cannot 'attach' as easily and the look stays stable.
  • 'Waterproof' is not the same as 'water-resistant'. Many products are only water-resistant – they withstand a bit of sweat or a few droplets. True waterproof products are formulated more strongly to withstand much more water contact. If you need real reliability (e.g. beach, sport, wedding), check the labelling carefully.
  • Powder can't truly be waterproof – that's why creams & liquids have the advantage. A classic powder soaks up oil (sebum) and mattifies excellently, but it loses effectiveness when it comes into contact with water. Waterproof textures are therefore usually liquid or creamy because the film-technology based on polymers/silicones works better – for example in mascaras, eyeliners, foundations or long-wear lip products.
