Diuretic foods

Drain your body naturally with these 10 foods

Diuretic foods are real everyday helpers when it comes to getting rid of excess water and feeling more comfortable in your body. They support detoxification, promote healthy-looking skin and give a fresh appearance. But which foods belong to this group and how do they work?
  • Cucumbers

They are made up of about 95% water and are therefore excellent for hydration. Compounds they contain, such as silicon, vitamin C and silica, support mild diuresis and can help improve tissue firmness. Include cucumbers raw as a snack, in refreshing smoothies or as part of infused water.

  • Watermelon

With a water content of around 92 percent, watermelon is an ideal source of fluids and also has a diuretic effect. Its high lycopene content protects your cells from oxidative stress, while vitamins A and C support your immune system. Enjoy watermelon as a refreshing snack after exercise or as a gentle way to start a draining day.

  • Asparagus

Asparagine contained in asparagus stimulates kidney function and thus promotes the elimination of excess water and salts. In addition, asparagus provides important nutrients such as folate, potassium, vitamin C and fibre, which stimulate metabolism. Prepare asparagus fresh, for example steamed with a squeeze of lemon or as a tasty salad side.

  • Lemons

Lemons support liver function and help detoxification via the bile. Citric acid also helps to balance the body’s pH, while the vitamin C they contain boosts the immune system. Start the day with warm lemon water to stimulate digestion and fluid elimination.

  • Pineapple

The tropical fruit is rich in bromelain, an enzyme that aids protein digestion and has anti-inflammatory effects. It also stimulates digestion and, due to its natural sugars, has a mild diuretic effect. Eat pineapple fresh and raw, for example in muesli or as a healthy snack between meals.

  • Berries (strawberries, raspberries, blueberries)

They are rich in anthocyanins and fibre and promote digestion, supporting elimination via the gut. They also provide plenty of fluid and thus relieve the kidneys. Eat berries preferably raw, for example with Skyr or in porridge, to gently help drain your body in the morning.

  • Celery

Celery helps regulate the body’s sodium level thanks to its high potassium content. It also contains the antioxidant luteolin, which has anti-inflammatory effects. Due to its high water content, celery supports fluid elimination particularly well. Enjoy it raw in salads or freshly pressed as a juice with apple and lemon.

  • Green tea

Green tea contains caffeine and catechins, which have a diuretic effect and stimulate the metabolism. The antioxidants it contains also promote fat burning. Drink two to three cups of green tea daily, ideally unsweetened and flavoured with lemon or ginger.

  • Tomatoes

Tomatoes are a good source of potassium and help remove excess sodium from your body. The lycopene they contain protects against cellular stress and also contributes to mild diuresis. Enjoy tomatoes raw in salads or as tomato juice with celery — this is especially helpful for swollen legs.

  • Parsley

Parsley is often underestimated but is an effective diuretic herb. It provides valuable vitamins K and C as well as flavonoids that support kidney function. Use parsley generously in smoothies, salads or soups to support your fluid elimination.
