10 tips for a successful pregnancy test

Pregnancy tests help you get early clarity about a possible pregnancy. Did you know that modern tests can be reliable just a few days after ovulation? With our 10 tips you will learn how to use the test correctly, obtain reliable results and avoid common mistakes.
  • Preferably use first‑morning urine

The first urine in the morning contains the highest concentration of the pregnancy hormone hCG. Testing in the morning increases the chance of a correct result, especially with very early testing.

  • Observe the reading time exactly

Always read the test result within the time window specified by the manufacturer. Reading too early or too late can lead to incorrect interpretations.

  • Use a timer for an exact reading

Strictly adhering to the waiting time is crucial. Set a timer so you do not read the result too soon or too late. Only within the correct timeframe is the result unambiguous.

  • Preferably test from the missed period onwards

A test taken at the earliest possible moment is often less reliable. Wait at least until the expected day of your period to obtain a meaningful measure of hormone levels.

  • Repeat the test if uncertain

If the result is negative but you feel pregnant or your period still hasn't appeared, wait a few days and test again. hCG levels can rise daily and become more easily detectable.

  • For early testing, use sensitive tests

These can detect hCG as early as five to six days before the expected period, but they are more prone to errors and often less reliable. Check the test sensitivity (from 10 or 25 mIU/ml) and choose the appropriate test for the stage.

  • Do not test after large fluid intake

Avoid excessive drinking before the test, as diluted urine can have a low hCG concentration and lead to a false negative result.

  • Store tests dry and airtight

Pregnancy tests are sensitive to moisture. Keep spare tests sealed and protected from humidity to preserve their functionality.

  • Watch for pregnancy signs in addition to the test

Symptoms such as breast tenderness or spotting can indicate pregnancy, even if the test is negative. This may be a reason to repeat the test later.

  • Arrange an appointment with a gynaecologist promptly after a positive test

After a positive result, a visit between the 6th and 8th week of pregnancy is recommended. An ultrasound will confirm the pregnancy and important checks will begin to safeguard the health of mother and child.

  • There are different types of pregnancy tests on the market: simple test strips, convenient sticks and digital tests with a clear result display. Each variant offers different advantages in handling and price.
  • A pregnancy test is most reliable when performed one to two days after a missed period, as the pregnancy hormone is then detectable with an accuracy of over 97 percent.
